EDBT Summer School 2019

Lyon, Saint Germain au Mont D'Or, France
September 2nd- September 6th, 2019

Extracting Hidden Knowledge
from Heterogeneous Massive Data

Lyon, France

Theme

The theme for the 14th EDBT Summer School is Extracting Hidden Knowledge from Heterogeneous Massive Data. One of the fundamental characteristics of Big Data is variety, which arises from data having different formats and structures, but also from the heterogeneity of applications and users involved in the data processing pipeline. It is crucial to tame data variety to help the design, the study and the development of the next generation data management and analytics tools. The theme of this new edition of the EDBT Summer School covers the many different data management challenges concerning data variety that need to be seen under new lenses and call for a radical rethinking due to the unprecedented scale of Big Data. These problems span from information and pattern extraction to information integration, data curation, entity resolution, query answering, ontology management and learning. One of the particular novelties of this edition is the fact that lectures on these topics will be given under different perspectives, at the intersection of the Database community with other communities, such as Knowledge Representation, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The school will also touch certain issues related to the Big Data veracity since the collection of data from many different heterogeneous sources, unavoidably creates data quality challenges that have to be handled in orchestration with the heterogeneity aspects.

Organization

The 2019 summer school follows the successful construction of previous EDBT schools, which last editions where held in Palamos, Spain in 2015 and Genova, Italy in 2017. As such, the school will provide stimulating lectures by leading researchers in the field, competitive research challenges to build upon and extend the lectures, and a lively scientific and social program.

The five-day school will take place from September 2nd to September 6th, 2019 in Saint Germain aux Monts d’Or, a small town in the surroundings of Lyon. The venue is the Domaine des Hautannes, which hosts both the lecture rooms and the participant guest rooms. Participants will be accommodated by pair in a twin room at the domain. The school registration fees include: (1) access to all the lectures and course materials, (2) accommodation for 5 nights at the Domaine des Hautannes, (3) all meals, coffee breaks, and social events. The arrival of participants is expected on Sunday evening (September 1st, starting from 5pm). The school will end on Friday Sept. 6th after lunch. Please see the program for a detailed timetable. Participants that arrive earlier or leave later than the school's official start and end time will need to book suitable accommodation by themselves. The Domaine is about 43km away from the Lyon-St. Exupery airport (i.e., 35 mins by car). A map showing the distances between the airport, Lyon city center and the venue can be found here .
